TUMERIC - A Miracle Spice?

Tumeric is said to have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and is hailed for helping a host of conditions. But is it really a Miracle Spice?

Native to South Asia, Tumeric is now one of the most popular supplemets on the market today. There it is woven into daily life; in the cuisine as much as for medicinal purposes. From the Ginger family, it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. In North Africa, the Middle East and India, Tumeric's  anti-inflammatory qualities are used to treat the symptoms of arthritis, colitis, cardiovascular disease and it is claimed even cancer.

“Turmeric is auspicious and one of the most important herbs,” said Anupama Kizhakkeveettil, a board member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association. “We use it for so many different conditions, it’s a time-tested herb.” 

Turmeric is widely recognised for helping a host of conditions from high cholesterol, depression, gingivitis, hay fever, premenstrual syndrome and even hangovers. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed to act as an antiviral, antiparasitic, antibacterial and  and has a proven history of helping with diabetes, pain, rheumatism, osteoarthritis, skin conditions like eczema and even memory.

Turmeric is packed with over two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds. Tumeric is a staple in curries, offering an earthy and warm taste rather than spicy. Try adding Tumeric freshly grated to juices, soups and stews or add it to your daily smoothies.

 Tumeric Latte

Turmeric and ginger both have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, so not only is this latte delicious, it is also very good for you.

Serves 2:

2 heaped teaspoon of peeled and grated fresh organic turmeric

2 teaspoon of peeled and grated chopped fresh organic ginger

2 tablespoon of coconut sugar

4 teaspoons coconut oil

2 cup of organic almond milk

A pinch of ground black pepper


Combine the turmeric, ginger, coconut oil and coconut sugar and blend in a nutribullet or similar.

Gently warm the almond milk in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling, then add this to your blender and blend until nice and frothy. Pour into a tall glass, add a touch of black pepper and enjoy!
